The designation recognizes Creighton’s growing role in Midtown Phoenix and the continued emergence of the Phoenix Medical Quarter as a hub for healthcare education, innovation and workforce development.
The unveiling took place at the Creighton University Health Sciences Campus and featured remarks from city, transit and university leadership.
“Creighton’s partnership with the City of Phoenix is about more than a campus — it is an investment in the people, the neighborhoods and the future we are building together,” said Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD, president of Creighton University. “Being recognized on the light rail system reflects our commitment to accessibility, collaboration and preparing the next generation of health professionals in Phoenix.”
Since opening its Health Sciences Campus at Park Central, Creighton University has become a major anchor in Midtown Phoenix, drawing students, faculty and healthcare partners while contributing to transit-oriented development and economic growth. University leaders are now beginning to plan for a Phase II expansion, signaling a long-term commitment to Phoenix.
“Creighton’s presence at Park Central has helped transform this area into a vibrant, connected center for healthcare and education,” said Sharon Harper, Chairman and CEO of Plaza Companies, the co-developer of Park Central. “This recognition underscores how institutions like Creighton are shaping the Phoenix Medical Quarter and strengthening our city’s urban core.”
Mayor Kate Gallego highlighted the importance of education, transit access and strategic development in Phoenix’s continued growth.
“Park Central represents all the vital junctures of light rail in one place,” Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said. “It allows residents and visitors traveling to jobs, schools, and universities an affordable option while serving as an economic driver for the city. Creighton University has become a critical healthcare education anchor in Phoenix, directly supporting workforce development, community health, and economic investment.”
Councilwoman Laura Pastor, whose district includes Park Central, emphasized the local impact of Creighton’s campus.
“This recognition reflects the positive momentum happening in Midtown Phoenix,” Pastor said. “Creighton has become an anchor for this area, bringing energy, jobs and educational opportunity while supporting the continued revitalization of the Phoenix Medical Quarter.”
Valley Metro CEO Jessica Mefford-Miller noted the significance of connecting riders to key regional destinations.
“Valley Metro is proud to recognize Creighton University with the naming of our light rail station at Thomas/Central Avenue,” Mefford-Miller said. “This designation represents an important connection between public transit and educational opportunities, serving as a gateway to future healthcare careers and to economic prosperity in our region.”
